It was a funny moment for me when I realized I needed a design board as an adult. When you’re younger I feel like we’re constantly making inspiration boards as an exercise for envisioning things or outcomes. But now, it’s something I use every day in my business whether it’s a digital version or a physical version. I had been eyeing a pinboard from Pottery Barn for a while but was convinced I could DIY it cheaper. After brainstorming for a while, my husband and I figured out how to make a linen pinboard on our own.
You may be wondering how to make a linen pinboard of your own! We’ve outlined the simple steps below, as well as the products needed, and where to get them. Drop a comment in the comments section to let us know what you’ll be using your pinboard for!
First,you’ll need to gather your supplies:
- Cork Panel (24×36)
- Spray Gorilla Glue – this can also be found at Lowes or Michael’s
- A bag of Quilt Batting
- One yard of linen fabric (Hobby Lobby or Joanne’s)
- 1/4 inch plywood board (24×36)
- Stable gun + staples
- Scissors
Second, apply spray adhesive liberally to 1/4 inch plywood and the back of the cork panel. Work quickly. Align cork panel to plywood and apply constant pressure for about a minute.
Below, you’ll see this is when we put a large weighted box on top of it to apply pressure.
Third, lay out the batting and then lay the cork board face down on top of the batting. Stretch the batting over the face of the cork board and put a few staples along the perimeter to hold together. Trim the excess batting from the back of the board.
Fourth, lay out the linen fabric and then lay the cork board face down on top of the linen fabric. Staple the top edge of the linen to the back of the cork board. Stretch the fabric on the bottom edge. Staple the bottom edge, stretching the linen fabric and stapling as you go.
Lastly, fold the corners like a bed sheet and stretch and staple one side. Repeat on the last side,
stretching and stapling as you go. Trim the excess linen fabric.
Optional final step for how to make a linen pinboard: install hanging hardware of your choice. Follow packaging instructions. Standard picture hanging hardware can be used.
